Setting Yourself up for Success on Zoom

Follow the checklist below to get the most out of your online course.

  • If you’re using a computer to call in... connect to the internet using an ethernet cable instead of WiFi. This will ensure a better connection. And have your charger ready!

  • If you’re using a phone or tablet to call in... use a tripod or stand to stabilize your device in a horizontal (landscape) position. And have your charger ready!

  • When positioning your device... frame your camera horizontally so we can see just above your waist to the top of your head. Please make sure your mannequin and hands are visible while you work. Here’s an example to help:

  • Use wireless earbuds. Fully charge and pair your earbuds with your device beforehand. Wear one at a time, and charge the other one simultaneously. When one dies, you can swap them out without missing class time.

  • Lighting + Background: light your workspace and self brightly with indirect light. An undistracting background like a flat, white wall is best.

  • When deciding what to wear choose a white or light-colored top. This allows your torso to serve as a backdrop for your work.

  • Please self-mute during class except when sharing with the group or communicating with the instructor. This will minimize chatter and improve instruction.

  • Avoid locations in front of or next to windows…strong overhead lighting that creates harsh shadows… rooms with ambient noise or an echo… and blocking the camera’s view of the mannequin. Our ability to give quality feedback depends on how well we can see your work.
